“I cried because I had no shoes, then I met a man who had no feet.”

I woke up the other morning in my cozy blankies.  My coffee was handed to me hot and steaming and perfect. I chose my outfit for work. I took a hot steamy shower just steps away from my warm bed. I started my reliable car that gets me comfortably to my office job. Wishing it was not Monday yet.  I am not rich - by American standards. But, as I reflected on my morning I couldn't stop thinking of the children's faces I came upon on an orphanage website in Uganda.  The Otina Waa Children's Village. Innocent, young faces with the sad eyes of a person who's lived way too many difficult years.  They literally have nothing.  Not only that, but they've faced unimaginable sadness, fear and abuse in their few years on Earth.  I found this site after watching the movie Machine Gun Preacher. I couldn't get those faces out of my mind. Tears well up talking about the movie. Knowing it was a true story just hurt my heart and made me feel ill. Now, don't get me wrong, I wasn't blind to the struggles (that's puting it very lightly) in Uganda and Sudan. This movie was just like a well needed slap in the face.  There's poverty and abuse all over the world. I and so many people I know have it SO easy and we do nothing. I complain about the silliest things. Things that if I think about it, really do not matter.

These children matter. I wish I could help them all. If we all did something, even something little even in our own neighborhood, couldn't we make the lives innocent children a little bit easier or bring them some joy and hope?

  1. Oops, I don't know if I clicked through on my comment. Anyway, it is hard not to want to help everyone. I sometimes feel so helpless, but realize I can only do so much. Several men have come to the city who are without limbs. They beg for money. I have donated to a few of them, but realized I would be broke if I helped all of them. It is sad that as fancy and high tech of a world we live in we can't find a way to help these people.
